2021 Mazda MX-30 – Company’s First All-Electric Crossover

The all-new 2021 Mazda MX-30 is the company’s first all-electric vehicle. The upcoming crossover made its debut at the 2019 Tokyo Auto Show. It is a subcompact model with sharp design and a very modern appearance. 2021 MX-30 comes with a coupe-like roofline, and its interior is tech-rich. You will find a lot of standard amenities and safety aids.

Mazda says the crossover will arrive with a 35.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and front-mounted motor. The price starts below $40,000, and this crossover will firstly arrive in Europe. On top of that, MX-30 will hit the dealerships in the U.S. at some point in 2021.

Mazda MX-30 Comes With Modern and Sportier Styling

The forthcoming 2021 Mazda MX-30 is the brand-new company’s model. On top of that, this is the first time Mazda is working on an all-electric model. Dimensionally, MX-30 is similar to the CX-3 and CX-30 models. Like always, Mazda will look to deliver a subtle design with stylish appearance. We must admit, new MX-30 looks quite impressive. The overall impression is that the MX-30 really looks like the CX-30 model. It comes with a long hood and sloping roofline.

A blacked-out roof looks amazing, and pillars are providing a sportier look. Furthermore, steeply raked rear-windshield adds a spoiler, another sporty cue. The charging port sits behind the right-side rear door. As for the doors, Japanese manufacturers will introduce “freestyle” doors, like on the RX-8 model. They work almost in the same way as the suicide doors.

Interior Features

The cabin of the upcoming 2021 Mazda MX-30 looks very modern. The interior uses plenty of natural materials. That includes cork and breathable fabric upholstery made from recycled plastic bottles. The second row is cramped while the front seats are offering ample legroom and headroom. We like the floating center console, which frees up the space for storage behind the touchscreen. The same touchscreen can be used for climate controls.

Cargo area isn’t that generous, but it offers similar figures as the area in CX-3 crossover. Mazda will surely deliver numerous driver-assistance features and safety aids. You don’t have to worry about the technology inside the cabin, MX-30 will offer basically everything. Of course, some of the features will be optional.

All-Electric Powertrain, Charging, Driving Range

According to Mazda, the new MX-30 will arrive with only one electric motor. Furthermore, it will be mounted in the front, under the hood. That means the 2021 Mazda MX-30 will be a front-wheel-drive crossover. Info about the horsepower figures is yet to be announced. You can charge new model on standard AC power and faster DC chargers as well.

The driving range is another mystery. However, we expect a competitive range, similar to the Chevy Bolt EV or Hyundai Kona Electric. That means we can expect around 250 miles of range. Both Kona Electric and Bolt EV are offering around 120 MPGe. The upcoming MX-30 should deliver similar numbers.

2021 Mazda MX-30 Price and Release Date

The approaching 2021 Mazda MX-30 will hit the markets in four different trim levels. The base Sport model starts at $35,000. Touring and Grand Touring models will cost 38,000 and $40,000. The range-topping Signature trim level is priced at $43,000.

Mazda’s first all-electric crossover will arrive in Europe, later in 2020. The U.S. markets will have to wait a little longer, so the United States version will arrive at the beginning of 2021.
