Jeep is about to introduce three plug-in hybrid models in 2021. That includes the 2021 Jeep Wrangler Hybrid off-roader. Besides that, both Renegade and Compass models will get the same type of powertrain. Electrification is the future for every automaker and Jeep is no different. The company has a plan to electrify basically its complete lineup before 2025.
Interestingly, Jeep revealed a 1.3-liter turbo gasoline engine that will get hybridization. However, this engine will be available in Compass and Renegade models. We still don’t know if Wrangler is getting the very same output. Probably not.
2021 Wrangler Hybrid Features Plug-In Powertrain
New 2021 Jeep Wrangler Hybrid has been present in its Sahara trim level. On the other hand, the vehicle on display was a Rubicon version. This clearly indicates that the hybrid powertrain won’t be offered across all trim levels. Of course, the most interesting part is the hybrid setup and which engine will make the production. As we wrote, Compass and Renegade models were presented with a smaller 1.3-liter displacement. It seems unlikely that the 2021 Wrangler PHEV will use the same output.
Instead, a reliable 3.6-liter V6 is a more probable outcome. This engine will be mated to a pair of electric motors and a battery pack. We don’t know how the total output will be rated, but regular gasoline V6 provides 285 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. Electric motors/generators will surely boost the power a little more, around 300 horsepower. Jeep confirmed the 4×4 capability in the hybrid variant, but fuel efficiency ratings are not available yet.
The showcased model departs from the base 2021 Jeep Wrangler Hybrid in many ways. As for the regular Wrangler SUV, so far, we’ve seen spy photos. Jeep will install a couple of exterior upgrades, and the rear part is slightly unchanged. Whatsoever, we can see the section between the center and the taillights is clear, while the electric powertrain will sit between the driveshaft and exhaust system.
The iconic seven-slot grille will largely remain. You need to have a well-trained eye to set the regular and hybrid model apart. Of course, charging port is one way to realize if you are looking in a hybrid variant. However, the interior of the Wrangler PHEV slightly departs as it offers a technology made exclusively for hybrids.
The approaching 2021 Jeep Wrangler Hybrid will offer the same color palette as the base gasoline model. Interestingly, Jeep is offering more colors year after year. Now, in 2021, Wrangler should become available in eleven different exterior paints. With that in mind, everything starts with Black, Billet Silver and Bikini.
Moreover, Wrangler offers Bright White, Firecracker Red and Granite Crystal. One of the new paints is called Hellayella. Mojito is another interesting color option, along with Ocean Blue and Punk’n Metallic. Lastly, Jeep will offer a Sting-Gray exterior color.
2021 Jeep Wrangler Hybrid Price and Release Date
Jeep is yet to roll out hybrid variants of Cherokee, Grand Cherokee and Gladiator models. On the other hand, a new 2021 Jeep Wrangler Hybrid is one of the first models to get electric powertrain. The price will start at $40,000 or slightly below that.
To compare, the base trim level costs $30,000. Wrangler will finally get a tough competitor as Ford is releasing its Bronco SUV. As for the Wrangler, a hybrid variant will hit the dealerships in the last quarter of 2020.
